ACTIVITIES

(text by Collin, Norah, Steven and Wayne)

During the week we spent at the Youth With a Mission campsite, there were various creative workshops we had and some, which we also facilitated. This was an opportunity to develop our skills physically and mentally. These excercises were inspiring to all of us, teaching us more of our culture and that of the Finnish. Following is the outline of some of the activities that took place.

POTTERY

At the Youth With a Mission campsite there happened to be an american cheramist working and so we had a possibility to observe his working methods. While working he also explained the history and the purpose of the organization that owned the camp site. He also told how much pottery and the Bible goes together.

VISUAL ARTS

We also had a Visual Arts workshop, which was presented by Krista, one of the Finnish teachers. We learned that when you draw something, it should not only come from the mind but it should rather come from the heart. She taught that a real drawing should reflect your heart and also the kind of person you are. Although most of us didn't have a drawing background, when our drawings were finished, they were all beautiful because they came from our hearts. We used the hand-made paper to make childhood maps. In the figure below Lotta's map is shown. On the left Ms. Bridget Kloppers is colouring the pulp.  In the middle Steven and Adriaan are discussing about self portraits  - "Me as an animal, a colour, a scenery and a musical instrument".

MEDIA

During our Media workshop, we had to draw the picture of the world indicating the different parts of the world, which are affected by the war. We asked questions like; Why was there war? Who started it? Why people don't come to an understanding and so on. This was a great experience as we could hear different opinions and also draw conclusions from such questions. Heidi, the Finnish group leader, presented the workshop.

TOUR OF THE CITY OF WINDHOEK

During the week we went on a tour of the city. We visited the informal settlements in Katutura, the Parliament of Namibia among other places. We were given a tour of the National Assembly were we had a lifetime opportunity to sit on the seat where ministers sit, which was so much fun. We got briefings about the law making policy of   Namibia. This was a huge learning experience for us all. It made us realize that it isn't as easy as we thought. Some of us also rethought about the idea of becoming one of the next presidents of Namibia. All and all, this was a great moment of learning and fun to us all.

BRAAI AT GROSS BARMEN

We visited Gross Barmen hot springs on Saturday the 5th of June. All the learners enjoyed themselves because we had to braai our own dinner (The Namibian Way). The Finnish learners greatly enjoyed this because this was their first time to experience this in their life. Fun filled the day, as we were swimming and dancing.

AFRICAN ART WORKSHOP

This was an opportunity to show the Finnish learners our African way of doing art. They found it very impressive and enjoyed it very much. We did textiles including all sorts of African dying. They had the opportunity to take their art pieces home as souvenirs and reminders of Namibia. On behalf of the group we want to pass our sincere thanks and gratitude to Ms. Amelia, as she represented our country in the presentation of this workshop.

THE TRIP TO THE COAST

During the final weekend of the camp, we went to the coast, mainly Swakopmund and Walvis Bay where we paid a courtesy call to the mayor of Walvis Bay, Chief Mandume. We also had a heartbreaking moment when we climbed Dune 7, the highest Dune in Walvis Bay and the second highest in the world. It was really fun and a tiring, but a wonderfull experience for all of us – especially for Finns who do not have such dunes in their country. Watching the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean was the most beautiful sight ever. Everyone enjoyed this trip and we will always remember it. May we all keep these memories in our hearts.
