CAMP OVERVIEW (text by Collin Claasen)

The Finland/ Namibia Intercultural Camp was a huge success, not only because the learners had a lot of fun but because of the tremendous amount of knowledge we have gained and new talents we have discovered within ourselves. All of us came here not knowing what to expect and yet what we found did not disappoint us.

The interaction of the learners was amazing because they came from different countries, d
ifferent backgrounds and different cultures and yet we all new in some way we were all the same and that we had a lot in common. The different beliefs didn't in any way play a role in what we discovered in side each other. We discovered that it was only boundaries that separated us and that we are similar in everyway imaginable.

We learned so much and what we learned was incredible. We learned things from playing African drums, coloring fabrics, masked fabric, script writing, drama, poem writing and so forth. These things were so much fun and everyone enjoyed doing them. I think that most of us also found a hobby to do in our spare time. We also discovered the City of Windhoek and the informal settlements. We were all touched by the enormous amount of suffering that we saw there. To some of us it served as a wake up call especially to the learners from Windhoek. It made us realize that we are not alone on this earth and that we should appreciate what we have and not take it for granted. There are people who are in need of our help and as the youth of the world, it is our responsibility to start making a change.

We didn't only work, but we had a lot of fun as well. We played games, danced, composed songs and a lot more fun activities. These activities didn't only allow us to socialize, but also they were activities that really built up our character and self respect. They allowed us not only to think of ourselves, but to consider other peoples feelings too. It was a changing experience for all of us.

The camp allowed us to build strong friendships. We all learned something from each other. We have all found a special place in each others hearts that no other person will ever fill. We have all bonded on so many levels.

It is only fare to thank the Summer High School Association and Dawid Bezuidenhout High School for the tremendous amount of effort they have put in to the organizing and planning of this exceptional camp. We are all so glad that we were given the opportunity to participate in this once in a life time experience. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to learn so much in such a short period of time.

We also would like to thank Heidi, Krista, Miss Kloppers and Mr. Fredericks for the invaluable contribution towards the success of this camp. Thank you very much for your patience and great efforts towards this camp. We appreciate it very much.
